Strengthening the Role of Local Communities, Phase 2

Aim: Improve the quality of life of the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina through empowered, gender responsive local communities

How: The local communities (mjesne zajednice – MZ) is a unique feature of Bosnia and Herzegovina and have a large potential to improve the quality of life of the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina through empowered, gender responsive local communities that facilitate active citizen engagement in public life, stand for people-centered performance of local governments, and catalyze democratic transformation at the local level. The project has a country-wide outreach. It intends to work directly with approximately 40 local governments (28% of local governments in the country) and 200 MZs (8% of MZs in the country), distributed throughout the country. The project works with capacity building of elected officials and municipal staff and on improving the organization at the MZ-level. The project also works with local civil society organizations in creating stronger accountability mechanisms towards the local governments. Switzerland is co-financing the project with 50 MSEK, the Sweden with 31.6 MSEK and the Bosnia and Herzegovina with 22 MSEK.

Why: In a democracy, politicians and public decision makers need to maintain communication with citizens. This project empowers local communities to have communication.
